Women* of Color Leadership Cohort — Fall 2021

Women of Color Leadership Cohort

November 9 December 7, 2021

*trans, cis, and gender-nonconforming, women, femmes, and nonbinary individuals

Freedom movements, and the people who cultivate them through movement organizations, are facing both unprecedented opportunities to win and grave threats. From 2020 to now, we at re:power have been reflecting on how the intensifying nature of opposition has required quick skilling up and deeper commitments to ethical and effective leadership.

For some, this convergence of crisis and opportunity has created a dilemma, where opportunities to grow in leadership are met with a scarcity of affordable training resources to support the sustainability of our roles. We’ve seen expansive opportunities to hire entry level organizers and movement workers, and the creation of training and community for executive directors.  For movement workers whose role rests in the middle (e.g. Lead Organizers, Directors, Managers, Strategists, Coordinators), the opportunities to build skills and leadership are lacking. That experience is further compounded for women of color, for low to no income folks, for queer and trans people, for immigrants and others who are sitting at the margins.

re:power’s Women of Color Leadership Cohort is a new opportunity for movement workers and middle management staff to enhance their skills in a 3-week program.

In this course, we will strengthen our muscles for strategic thinking and visioning, goal-setting and prioritization, and management of both people and projects. We will also create space for reflection, community building and peer-to-peer learning and support.

Who is this course for?

  • Folks who identify as women* of color leaders and whose role rests in the middle (e.g. Lead Organizers, Directors, Managers, Strategists, Coordinators)
  • Folks who want to deepen their leadership and management practices
  • Folks who hold middle management roles in their organizations

* trans, cis, and gender-nonconforming, women, femmes, and nonbinary individuals.

FEES

$100 – $600 Sliding Scale Contribution

You’ll make a sliding scale contribution of $100 – $600.

We believe people with more wealth, privilege, and access to money—and who benefit from systems of oppression—should pay more.

If you work at an organization with more than 60 employees, please ask your employer to cover the full cost of this training. If there’s anything that would help you make the request, please let us know.

We know that this might be a new way of looking at things. Please reach out to data@repower.org if you have any questions.

Applicants

Ideal applicants are women of color movement workers whose role rests in the middle (ex. Lead Organizers, Directors, Managers, Strategists, Coordinators). We welcome low to no income folks, queer and trans people, immigrants and others who are sitting at the margins.

Here are some attributes shared by all our applicants:

Commitment to Learning and Growth: No matter how long you’ve been in the movement, as long as you are committed to learning and growth─both your own as well as others in your community─then you’re in the right place!

Organizing Insight: You don’t need to be a professional politico, but we’re looking for applicants with experience doing organizing work on the ground. That work can be tied to grassroots, electoral, and/or issue organizing. We seek to support organizers who are currently part of a campaign effort or are seeking to build one.

Dedication to Inclusive Politics and Intersectional Solutions: At re:power, we center race, class, gender and sexuality across all our trainings – it’s part of our practice of inclusive politics. We want organizers to be open to new ideas regarding it and to the ideas and contributions from their fellow organizers who will reflect our diverse communities.

Technical Requirements

You will need a technological device capable of connecting to the Internet and downloading files. Windows machines, Macs and Unix boxes all welcome. We will be using Zoom and request that whenever possible, you turn on the video function.
