Women of Color Leadership Cohort

June 8, 2022

Overview

Women of Color Leadership Cohort is a 12-week cohort experience curated specifically by and for self-identifying women of color (WoC), with learning spaces designed to amplify the unique leadership abilities within women of color while building connections and continued growth. This cohort experience focuses heavily on heart work—an intentional focus on personal development of women of color mentally and emotionally—addressing participants’ holistic needs to step into authentic liberated leadership.

Participants will cultivate a national network of women of color leaders; develop skills in management, strategy, media, and funding practices; and practice centering their intersectional identities as leaders, managers, and organizers. The cohort will develop skills and practices that address the needs of WoC in management and leadership roles including addressing root causes and issues, strategic planning, organizing as a leader, communication, marketing, and fundraising. This program will also cultivate spaces for relationship-building, resource-sharing and health and wellness to help participants find sustainability and joy in the work. The experience will culminate in a transition to coaching, mentoring, and joining re:power’s alumni network.

Who is this cohort for?

  • People identifying as both women and a person of color (Black, Indigenous, Latina, Asian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and Multi-racial)
  • Organizers and advocates
  • Legislative, policy, and campaign leaders
  • Managers and mid-level directors

Ideal applicants come from all walks of life, from various sectors and regions of mid level managers and directors. This cohort is for women of color who are passionate about and want to deepen their impact professionally and personally.

Course Expectations

This is a dynamic cohort experience and if you are applying, you should prepare to be fully present and engaged throughout.

We will meet twice in person at the beginning and end of the cohort experience, and we will request proof of vaccination and a negative COVID test within 48 hours of the convening from all participants.

  • To maximize connection and community-building during in-person gatherings, we will not be offering a hybrid virtual option.

In between those meetups, we will meet virtually once a week for eight sessions. For the virtual sessions, we ask that participants actively engage by using the chat function, coming off mute to share verbally, and participating in breakout group discussions. If you are able, we strongly encourage participants to turn on video during virtual sessions.

Additional Information

What will I learn as part of this cohort?

The cohort will develop skills and practices that address the needs of WoC in management and leadership roles including addressing root causes issues, strategic planning, organizing as a leader, communication, marketing, and fundraising.

What’s the schedule?

We built this cohort while keeping in mind the busy schedules of women and the many hats we wear. We will meet in person in February and June. In-person session days are a full day of programming. Virtual sessions will be held each week from Feb 28–Jun 1. We highly encourage you to participate in each session of the training series, as the material builds on the skills learned. Attending each session live provides the best opportunity to engage in the materials and discussion.

Ultimately, we understand the complex lives we all live, so each session will also be recorded and available afterwards.

What’s your COVID-19 protocol? What steps should I take before attending the in-person trainings as part of this cohort experience?

Please refer to our protocol here.

How much time should I expect to spend on the course?

Participants should set aside three days for in-person programming in June and August along with approximately 4 hours a week for coursework—including attending virtual sessions and homework.

What equipment or software do I need to be able to attend the course?

During in person programming you will need a device capable of connecting to the Internet and downloading files. Windows machines, Macs and Unix boxes all welcome. We will be using Zoom for all virtual sessions and request that whenever possible, you turn on the video function.

Will we receive copies of the materials I saw in class?

Yes. Copies of the slides, handouts and other supplementary materials will be available to all trainees. We thank you in advance for your feedback.

I have a disability / need support or accommodation.

We are dedicated to supporting all of our trainees in their learning. If you need accommodation or additional support of any kind, please email wocprograms@repower.org with “Accommodation Request” in the subject line and we’ll do what we can.

Past requests for support have included, but were not limited to: early access to materials, different colored hand outs, an alternative method for completing quizzes, requesting facilitators speak directly into the camera and more.
