Overview
The Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives will provide strategic leadership and executive project management across our fully-remote, nationally-distributed 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations, developing new strategic partnerships, managing complex initiatives, operationalizing our strategic plan in close collaboration with our leadership team and across the organization, and serving as an organizational leader who models re:power’s culture and values.
Reporting directly to our Executive Director and serving as a member of our executive team, the Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives will be a critical thought partner to our leadership.
We are looking for a collaborative and strategic leader who is deeply connected to re:power’s values, especially our focus on building power with BIPOC women and gender expansive people; has practical knowledge of how the movement ecosystem operates; draws joy and energy from creating structure and possibility out of ambiguity and challenge; and would be energized by the opportunity to serve as a thought partner to a talented team of executive leaders, translating our Executive Director’s vision into actionable plans and working alongside our executive team to operationalize our Strategic Plan.
The position of Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives is a new role at re:power that has been thoughtfully considered. We have built a strong foundation for our organization, and we have done this all in a way that centers BIPOC leadership, especially women, trans, and gender-expansive people. Our team reflects our values; we are a Black woman-led organization with an all women of color leadership team, and majority women of color staff. Working together, we have created: a positive and values-aligned organizational culture; robust programming and the infrastructure to deliver it exceptionally well across platforms; strong fiscal and administrative practices; a highly skilled and supportive Board of Directors; an effective and visionary executive team; and an incredibly talented staff, all of whom bring tremendous capacity to our shared vision and work. Primary Responsibilities
Reporting to the Executive Director and serving as an integral member of our executive team, the Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives will collaborate across the organization to articulate and implement the strategic plan, build new strategic initiatives and partnerships to grow and sustain the organization, and develop and manage special projects that expand the influence and impact of re:power and our partners. The Managing Director, Strategic Initiatives will provide oversight and direct supervision for the Director of the Progressive Governance Academy (PGA), which is a signature strategic partnership led collaboratively across three partner organizations (re:power Fund, State Innovation Exchange (SiX), and Local Progress Impact Lab.) Responsibilities include:
Strategic Initiatives
- Work closely with our Executive Director to translate bold ideas into actionable plans, supporting her efforts to pilot and test new initiatives by coordinating activity and input across the executive team.
- Provide high level project management and analysis on executive projects, connecting the dots across the organization and partners to ensure that resources, plans, and processes are aligned with our strategic priorities and moving forward towards objectives.
- Support re:power’s participation in key coalitions, collaboratives, and other complex partnerships, bringing leadership skills and representing the organization as needed.
- Work collaboratively across the organization on revenue-generating initiatives, coordinating business development efforts and identifying fundraising opportunities against a clear vision for how our work aligns with an overall vision for the movement.
- In order to coordinate and move strategy across our network, support and advise our Executive Director in her work to meaningfully engage with re:power’s leadership community, both internally and externally, which include a broad range of beloved colleagues and partners, most notably our staff, our Board of Directors, our movement partners, and our funders–all of whom we regularly consult as critical thought partners and collaborators.
Organizational Leadership & Learning
- Collaborate closely with the executive team to develop and communicate an organization-wide strategic framework that will guide and support our efforts to operationalize our strategic plan across all areas of our work.
- Model our organizational culture and incorporate our values into your practice by grounding your work in racial justice; accountability and excellence; communication and collaboration; and care for our people.
- Lead process of designing, tracking, and (re)assessing a set of metrics / points of engagement to measure re:power’s strategic effectiveness of our program model. Manage external consultants in support of our impact evaluation work and make recommendations for assessments as needed. Use this information to identify strengths, areas of improvement and/growth, and guide us to continuously adapt as we seek to be responsive to changing conditions and align with our unique capacity to serve the movement.
- In partnership with the leadership team, provide support and training as needed to ensure that our staff have the tools and information they need to be successful in fully integrating the strategic framework into their plans.
- Seek guidance and learnings from our team as they relate to our capacity to execute strategic initiatives; collaborate with staff at all levels, engaging with their creativity, on the ground knowledge, and problem-solving skills to help adapt strategic approaches and move them across challenges and set-backs.
- Stay current with the possibilities for re:power by engaging with individuals and institutions across our ecosystem, conduct landscape reports as needed, lifting up findings, ideas, and drawing correlations across the movement space in order to help sharpen our analysis and strategies.
Progressive Governance Academy Management & Oversight
- Provide oversight and direct supervision for the Director of the Progressive Governance Academy (PGA), providing the Director and other PGA staff with support and thought partnership as they lead and drive a complex, collaborative effort by re:power Fund, State Innovation Exchange (SiX) and Local Progress Impact Lab.
- Support the PGA Director in developing and implementing an evolving set of strategies for re:power Fund’s participation in the PGA, lifting up learnings and opportunities for deeper collaboration with PGA partners, and broader impact for the movement – including, but not limited to: revenue and expense forecasting and analysis, fundraising, and engagement with PGA stakeholders
- Support, coach or directly supervise other staff and contractors, as needed.

Experience and Skills
- You have 10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in areas relevant to the work described here at a nonprofit organization, ideally at both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, including 6+ years of managerial, supervisory, or team leadership experience.
- You are deeply connected to the movement for collective liberation, understand its history and promise. Ideally, you have generalist knowledge across some of the broad array of intersecting methods and fields that our partners work in (e.g. climate justice, voting rights, reparations, land justice, economic justice, worker power, civic engagement, leadership development, community organizing, disability justice, gender justice, electoral politics etc.) that is grounded in a sophisticated analysis of the ways in which systemic racism and other forms of oppression inform this work.
- You have a demonstrated commitment to building power with BIPOC communities and an understanding of how to align internal organizational practice and strategy with stated values.
- You have experience in working in complex coalitions and partnerships with success in building alignment across differences in order to achieve shared goals.
- Knowledge of and appreciation for the unique role elected officials hold in the progressive movement with a passion for being in service to this particular constituency.
- Experience developing and driving impact on successful programs, including budget management and ideally at least some fundraising experience (especially with institutional giving)
- You have a deep understanding of practices, theories, and policies involved in strategic planning and organizational development, bringing knowledge and experience across various matters.
- You have experience with data analysis and performance metrics and a high degree of comfort with using evolving technologies to create and monitor complex processes.
- Willingness to work non-standard hours, including weekends as needed and travel when required. Senior leaders at re:power travel between 3-5 times per year at minimum and are expected to travel to board meetings, senior team retreats, and represent the organization at conferences and other gatherings as needed.

Compensation & Benefits
Starting salary for this position ranges from $128,000 to $151,670 with new staff typically coming in at the middle of this range. re:power offers a comprehensive benefits package with excellent/health/life/disability insurance, including these and other employment-related benefits:
